A REPORT ON THE TALENT NURTURE PROGRAMME
To assist the socially and economically disadvantaged people who reside in rural/tribal stretch in the vicinity of AEC Schools, the AEES has sought to provide opportunities to bright and promising children from less fortunate families by launching the Talent Nurture Programme.
The students are selected on the basis of their performance in the non-verbal perception test and oral test. Most of the children studying under this programme are first generation learners from deprived background. Hence special coaching is arranged during the summer vacation and also after school hours. Continuous monitoring of the academic work of these children is done and recorded. One PRT with the right attitude is assigned to this group as caretaker, mentor, friend and guide. However, the HMs and Principals have been very encouraging and supportive in the case of such children.
Apart from free education, the children selected under TNP receive a monthly scholarship (Rs.300/- for every boy student and Rs.400/- for every girl student) to meet the travel and refreshment expenses. They are also provided free uniforms, textbooks and medical facilities.
The programme was started in June 1999 at three centres: Tarapur, Rawatbhata and Kakrapar. It was extended to 6 more centres by 2002: Manuguru, Kaiga, Jaduguda, Narwapahar, Kalpakkam & Anupuram and Indore. Narora and Kudankulam were included in 2004. In 2007-2008, 954 children (505 boys + 449 girls) are studying under this programme in 16 schools at 11 centres. The TNP students of first batch are now in Class X. The details of the children admitted in Class I for academic session 2007-08 and the total number children studying under this programme during the session 2007-2008 are as follows (as on 23.8.2007)

Computer Education
The AEES introduced computer education in the AEC schools in 1999, beginning with Std VI and later expanded the programme to cover classes IV – X.
The Academic Unit has prepared the syllabi for all the classes for the systematic teaching of all concepts as well as programming. All the schools have been
equipped with good computer laboratories to support the programme.
Log In! - the newly launched textbooks for classes IV – X are being sent to all the schools to make the learning of computer interesting and effective.
Stipendiary teachers (English)
A novel programme to train and recruit PRTs for the AEC Schools was launched in the year 2004. 9 stipendiary teachers were inducted into the pilot course
after a rigorous test and interview. They were trained in English communication, English methodology, maths methodology, EVS methods and basic B.Ed practices.
The trainees also practised classroom teaching in a simulated environment using various micro skills. Computer education and physical education also figured in their
training as did the training in horticulture, learning disabilities and first aid. Besides the intensive training, the teachers were given the opportunity to observe other
teachers in the class and were gradually assigned actual classes to handle. They were also taken on field trips to institutions with a difference so as to get them
sensitized to the needs of children with special needs. The stipendiary teachers’ classroom performance was found to be good. After the one-year induction
programme, they were posted to various schools in Tarapur and Kakrapar for full time teaching. At the end of this second year, the trainees will be permitted to
enroll in a B.Ed programme (distance education mode) so that they could acquire a degree in education and finally become full-fledged teachers.
